Best eSIM for Asia: which countries regional plans really include, prices and unlimited options
Best eSIM for Asia: which countries regional plans really cover, from Southeast Asia to Japan, China and India, with daily-updated prices and unlimited plans.
The best Asia eSIM is the one that covers every country on your route, and that is where most regional plans differ. Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia are in almost every larger Asia plan in our database, Japan, South Korea and China in only two thirds to three quarters, and India, Nepal or Myanmar in very few. For a trip through Southeast Asia a regional plan is usually the simplest choice; for Japan, China or South Asia, check the country list carefully or combine country plans. This guide shows which countries Asia eSIMs really include, based on the thousands of regional plans we track every day.
Quick answer: which Asia eSIM for which trip
- Southeast Asia backpacking (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Indonesia): a Southeast Asia or larger Asia plan. Check that Cambodia and Laos are included.
- Japan and South Korea: a two-country Japan & Korea plan, or a larger Asia plan that names both.
- China with Hong Kong and Macau: a China–Hong Kong–Macau plan, or an Asia plan that explicitly lists mainland China.
- India, Nepal or Sri Lanka: often better with country plans, because few Asia plans include them.
- Asia plus Australia or New Zealand: some Asia-Pacific plans cover both; compare them with separate plans.
Which countries Asia eSIMs really cover
“Asia” means something different for every provider. Most regional plans in our database cover only two or three countries, often popular pairs such as Singapore and Malaysia or Japan and South Korea. Among the larger plans that cover at least eight countries, these are the shares that include each country:
| Country | Included in larger Asia plans |
|---|---|
| Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia | more than 90% |
| South Korea, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, Philippines, Taiwan | about 70–77% |
| Macau, Cambodia, China | about 60–66% |
| Laos | about 40% |
| India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka | about 30–35% |
| Myanmar, Nepal, Mongolia, Maldives, Bhutan | under 10% |
In other words: Southeast Asia is well covered by almost any larger plan, while Japan, China and Cambodia are missing from a quarter to two fifths of them. South Asia and the Himalaya are rarely part of an Asia plan at all. Some Asia-Pacific plans also include Australia and New Zealand, about a third of the larger plans in our database. The shares change whenever providers add or drop countries, so always check the current list before you buy.
On our Asia page, open “Covers … countries” on a plan to see the exact list, or use the “Must cover” filter to show only plans that include a specific country.
The right plan for your route
Instead of one big plan, many travellers do better with a plan that matches their route. Small bundles of two or three countries make up more than half of all Asia plans from the 38 providers in our database. Some typical routes:
- Southeast Asia: around 400 plans cover all eight classic backpacker countries (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines).
- Japan, South Korea and China: more than 1,300 plans include all three. If you only visit Japan and Korea, a two-country plan is usually the simpler option.
- China, Hong Kong and Macau: several hundred “Greater China” plans cover all three; some Asia plans include Hong Kong and Macau but not the mainland.
- India and South Asia: close to 900 regional plans include India, but only around 190 include Nepal and around 130 Myanmar. For these, a country plan is often the better choice.
- Central Asia and the Caucasus: separate regional plans cover Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, or Armenia and Georgia.
If your trip spends most of its time in one country, a country plan there plus a small regional plan for the rest can be cheaper than one large plan. Our guides for Thailand, Vietnam, Japan and South Korea cover the country options.
Asia eSIM prices: the cheapest plan for every data amount
The table shows the cheapest Asia regional plan for each data amount with at least 7 days of validity. Note that the cheapest offers often cover only two or three countries, so check the country count shown under each plan:
| Data | Validity | Price | Per GB | Provider | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 GB regional plan, 2 countries | 7 days | $0.92 (€0.82) | €0.82 | eSIM.dog | View plan |
| 2 GB regional plan, 3 countries | 15 days | €1.31 | €0.66 | Stellar eSIM | View plan |
| 3 GB regional plan, 2 countries | 7 days | €1.55 | €0.52 | Yoho Mobile | View plan |
| 5 GB regional plan, 2 countries | 7 days | €2.19 | €0.44 | Yoho Mobile | View plan |
| 10 GB regional plan, 2 countries | 7 days | €3.51 | €0.35 | Yoho Mobile | View plan |
| 20 GB regional plan, 2 countries | 7 days | €6.11 | €0.31 | Yoho Mobile | View plan |
| 50 GB regional plan, 2 countries | 7 days | €12.26 | €0.25 | Yoho Mobile | View plan |
Plans that cover ten or more countries cost more per gigabyte than small bundles. Pay for a large plan only if you really visit several countries in it. Validity matters too: for a month of travel, a 30-day plan avoids buying a second one halfway through. All prices are refreshed daily on our Asia page; current discounts are on our promo codes page.
Unlimited data across Asia
About a quarter of the Asia regional plans in our database are sold as unlimited. As elsewhere, almost all of them have a daily full-speed allowance, most often 1, 2 or 3 GB, after which the speed drops, frequently to 384 kbps or even 128 kbps. Only some keep 1 Mbps or more, which is still usable for maps and messaging.
| Validity | Cheapest unlimited | With 2 GB/day or more at full speed |
|---|---|---|
| 1 day | $0.71 (€0.64) · MicroEsim 500 MB/day at full speed, then 384 kbps | €0.97 · Stellar eSIM 2 GB/day at full speed, then reduced |
| 3 days | €1.08 · Yoho Mobile 500 MB/day at full speed, then 128 kbps | €2.02 · Yoho Mobile 2 GB/day at full speed, then 128 kbps |
| 5 days | €1.40 · Yoho Mobile 500 MB/day at full speed, then 128 kbps | €3.07 · Yoho Mobile 2 GB/day at full speed, then 128 kbps |
| 7 days | €1.78 · Yoho Mobile 500 MB/day at full speed, then 128 kbps | €4.13 · Yoho Mobile 2 GB/day at full speed, then 128 kbps |
| 10 days | €2.36 · Yoho Mobile 500 MB/day at full speed, then 128 kbps | €5.71 · Yoho Mobile 2 GB/day at full speed, then 128 kbps |
| 15 days | €3.13 · Yoho Mobile 500 MB/day at full speed, then 128 kbps | €8.06 · Yoho Mobile 2 GB/day at full speed, then 128 kbps |
| 30 days | €5.47 · Yoho Mobile 500 MB/day at full speed, then 128 kbps | €15.12 · Yoho Mobile 2 GB/day at full speed, then 128 kbps |
On a long trip with plenty of hostel and café WiFi, a fixed data plan with top-ups is often cheaper. Unlimited pays off if you navigate a lot, share your connection or work on the road. For details, see Unlimited eSIM plans: how unlimited are they really?
How much data for a multi-country Asia trip?
Trips through Asia are often longer than a typical holiday, and WiFi in hotels, hostels and cafés is widely available. As a rough guide for one person:
| Trip | Typical use | Data |
|---|---|---|
| Two weeks, two or three countries | Maps, ride-hailing apps, messaging, social media | 5–10 GB |
| A month of backpacking | Navigation, bookings, photos, video calls | 10–20 GB |
| Two months or more, or remote work | Streaming, uploads, video meetings | Top-ups or unlimited |
Ride-hailing and delivery apps are part of everyday travel in much of Southeast Asia, so keep some data for them. About half of the Asia regional plans in our database state 5G, which you get in the larger cities if your phone supports it. For very long stays in a single country, a local prepaid SIM can be cheaper than a travel eSIM; most countries in the region require your passport to register one.
China in an Asia plan: what to check
Mainland China is included in about 60% of the larger Asia plans in our database. If China is on your route, check two things before you buy:
- Mainland China, not only Hong Kong and Macau. Many plans list Hong Kong and Macau separately; make sure “China” itself is in the country list.
- Access to the apps you use. Travel eSIMs often route your data through another country, which affects which apps and websites work in China. Our guide Best eSIM for China explains what to expect.
If China is only a short stop, a China–Hong Kong–Macau plan for those days plus a regional plan for the rest of the trip can be a good combination.
Regional plan or several country plans?
A regional plan saves you from buying and installing a new eSIM at every border, and it switches networks automatically when you cross into the next country. Country plans can be cheaper and sometimes use a better local network. A rule of thumb:
- Three or more countries in one trip: a regional plan is usually simpler and often cheaper overall.
- One or two countries, or a long stay in one: country plans tend to be better value.
- A country that few regional plans cover: combine a regional plan with a separate country plan; most phones can store several eSIMs.
Our guide Country, regional or global eSIM explains the trade-offs in more detail.
Before you buy and install
- Write down every country on your route, including stopovers, and compare it with the plan's country list.
- Check your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked; see Does my phone support eSIM?
- Install the eSIM at home over WiFi. Many plans only start when they first connect at your destination.
- When you cross a border, the eSIM should connect to the next country's partner network automatically. If it does not, switch flight mode on and off, or choose a network manually; see eSIM not working abroad.
- Keep an eye on the validity on long trips and top up before it runs out, if your provider allows it.
Questions travellers ask
Is there one eSIM for all of Asia?+
Not really. Even the largest Asia plans leave out some countries, most often in South Asia and the Himalaya. Plans with ten or more countries cover Southeast Asia, Japan, South Korea and usually China, but check the country list against your route.
Do Asia eSIMs include China?+
Many do, but not all. In our database about 60% of the larger Asia plans include mainland China. Some list only Hong Kong and Macau, so make sure China itself is named in the plan's country list.
Do Asia eSIMs include Japan?+
About three quarters of the larger Asia plans in our database include Japan. If you only visit Japan and South Korea, a two-country plan for both is often the simpler and cheaper option.
Which eSIM is best for backpacking in Southeast Asia?+
A Southeast Asia or larger Asia plan that lists every country on your route. Around 400 plans in our database cover Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines together; Laos and Cambodia are the countries most often missing.
Do Asia eSIMs work in India and Nepal?+
Only some. About a third of the larger Asia plans include India, and Nepal is in very few. For India, Nepal or Sri Lanka, a country plan or a dedicated South Asia plan is usually the better choice.
Are Australia and New Zealand included in Asia eSIMs?+
Some Asia-Pacific plans include them, about a third of the larger plans in our database. If you combine Asia with Australia or New Zealand, compare such a plan with separate plans for each part of the trip.
