Best eSIM for Spain: prices, networks, unlimited plans and EU roaming rules compared

Best eSIM for Spain: daily-updated prices, Orange, Movistar and Vodafone networks, unlimited plans, EU roaming rules and tips for Gibraltar and Andorra.

Guides · 10 October 2026 · 8 min read

If you travel to Spain from outside the EU, for example from the UK, Switzerland or the USA, a travel eSIM is usually much cheaper than roaming, and a plan with 3 to 10 GB on the Orange or Movistar network covers most holidays. If your SIM card is from an EU country, you may not need one at all, because EU roaming rules let you use your home plan in Spain. This guide compares the prices, networks and unlimited rules of the thousands of plans that cover Spain in our database, and explains what to watch out for on trips to Gibraltar, Andorra or Morocco.

Quick answer: which Spain eSIM to choose

  • A week or two in Spain: a country plan with 3 to 10 GB is enough for most travellers. All Spanish networks cover the cities and the coasts well.
  • Spain plus Portugal, France or Italy: a Europe plan covers several countries with one eSIM and is often barely more expensive than a Spain plan.
  • Day trip to Gibraltar or Andorra: check that your plan includes them; neither is in the EU.
  • Lots of streaming or remote work: an unlimited plan with at least 2 GB a day at full speed.
  • You have an EU SIM card: check your home plan first; you may be able to roam at no extra cost.

Spain eSIM prices: the cheapest plan for every data amount

Spain is one of the most competitive eSIM destinations, with offers from almost every provider we list. The table shows the cheapest plan for each data amount with at least 7 days of validity, including Europe plans that cover Spain:

When you compare, look beyond the headline price:

  • Validity: for a two-week holiday, a 15- or 30-day plan avoids running out of days before you run out of data.
  • Country or Europe plan: if you might cross into Portugal or France, a Europe plan saves you a second purchase.
  • Top-ups: with providers that allow them, you can start small and add data in the app.
  • Day passes: for a stopover or a single day, our database lists more than 600 day passes that cover Spain, which give you a daily data allowance for a set number of days.

Prices are refreshed daily. The full list with filters for data, validity, network and 5G is on our Spain eSIM page, and current discounts are on our promo codes page.

Unlimited data in Spain: check the speed after the limit

Almost a third of the plans that cover Spain are sold as unlimited, nearly all with a daily full-speed allowance. The most common rules for Spain in our database are 2 GB a day followed by 2 Mbps, and 1 GB a day followed by 384 kbps. Many plans, however, drop to 128 kbps after the allowance, which is only enough for messages.

“Unlimited” plans slow down after a daily full-speed allowance; the right column only counts plans that state at least 2 GB per day. Prices checked daily, last check 2 November 2026.

If you use maps, social media and the occasional video call, a fixed plan with 5 to 10 GB is often cheaper than unlimited. Unlimited pays off if you stream on mobile data or work online. Read the speed after the limit on each plan card before you buy; our guide Unlimited eSIM plans: how unlimited are they really? explains what the numbers mean.

How much data do you need in Spain?

Most trips to Spain are city breaks, beach holidays or a mix of both, and WiFi is common in hotels, holiday flats and cafés. As a rough guide for one person:

TripTypical useData
Long weekend in a cityMaps, messaging, social media, tickets1–3 GB
One to two weeks, beach or round tripNavigation, bookings, photos, some video calls5–10 GB
Several weeks, road trip or remote workStreaming, uploads, video meetings20 GB or unlimited

Driving with online navigation uses more data than walking with offline maps, and uploading holiday videos adds up quickly. If you are not sure, pick a plan that can be topped up and start with the smaller size. Our guide How much data do I need for travel? lists typical values per activity.

Orange, Movistar or Vodafone: which network is best?

Spain has three large mobile networks and a fourth that has grown in recent years. Travel eSIMs use them as follows in our database:

  • Orange: used by the most providers. Since 2024 Orange Spain and MásMóvil (Yoigo) have been merged into MasOrange, so some plans name Yoigo instead.
  • Movistar (Telefónica): the second most common network for travel eSIMs, with strong coverage in rural areas as well as cities.
  • Vodafone: used by around fifteen providers in our database, often as one of several networks the plan can choose from.

In the cities, along the coasts and on the Balearic and Canary Islands, all of them work well. Differences show up in the mountains and the sparsely populated interior, for example in Castile, Aragon or Extremadura; plans that can use several networks have an advantage there. Around two thirds of the plans that cover Spain state 5G. On our Spain page you can filter by network and 5G.

Do you need an eSIM in Spain? EU, UK and Swiss SIM cards

Whether a travel eSIM is worth it depends on where your SIM card is from:

  • EU and EEA SIM cards: under the EU roaming rules you use your home allowance in Spain at no extra cost. Some carriers apply a fair-use limit to the data you can use abroad, especially on cheap or unlimited domestic plans. If that limit is low, a travel eSIM for the extra data can still make sense.
  • UK SIM cards: since Brexit the EU rules no longer apply, and many UK carriers charge a daily fee for using your plan in the EU. A travel eSIM is often cheaper, especially for longer stays.
  • Swiss, US and other non-EU SIM cards: roaming in Spain is usually charged by the day or by the megabyte. A travel eSIM for data is almost always the cheaper option.

Whatever your home SIM, you can keep it active for calls and SMS while the travel eSIM handles data. Switch off data roaming on the home SIM so it does not use data by accident; our guide Dual SIM with a travel eSIM shows the settings, and eSIM vs roaming vs local SIM compares the costs.

Gibraltar, Andorra, Portugal and Morocco

Many trips to Spain include a day across the border. Coverage depends on the plan, not on Spanish networks:

  • Gibraltar: a British territory outside the EU with its own networks. EU roaming does not apply, so check that your plan lists Gibraltar. Many Europe plans in our database include it, most Spain-only plans do not.
  • Andorra: also outside the EU. More than a thousand plans in our database include it, mostly Europe plans, but by no means all.
  • Portugal and France: any Europe plan covers both. Our database lists close to 3,000 plans from over 30 providers that cover Spain, Portugal and France together.
  • Morocco: for a ferry trip from Tarifa or Algeciras, you need a plan that explicitly includes Morocco. Only around a hundred regional plans that cover Spain also include it, so a separate Morocco plan is often simpler; see our Morocco page.

Near the borders, your phone may connect to a foreign network before you actually cross. If your plan does not cover that country, set the network selection to manual and choose a Spanish network.

How to set up your Spain eSIM

  1. Check your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked; see Does my phone support eSIM?
  2. Buy and install the eSIM at home over WiFi, a day or two before the trip. Many plans only start when they first connect in Spain; the plan details say when the validity begins.
  3. Keep your home SIM for calls and SMS and switch off data roaming on it.
  4. After landing, turn on the travel eSIM, select it for mobile data and enable data roaming for the eSIM.
  5. Test it at the airport, where WiFi is available if something does not work. If you have no signal, see eSIM not working abroad.
Emergency number: 112 works throughout Spain and the rest of the EU, from any mobile phone.

Step-by-step instructions are in our guides for iPhone and Android.

Questions travellers ask

Do I need an eSIM for Spain if I have an EU SIM card?+

Usually not. Under the EU roaming rules you can use your home plan in Spain at no extra cost, although some carriers limit how much data you can use abroad. Check your plan's fair-use limit; if it is low, a travel eSIM for extra data can still be worthwhile.

Which network is best for an eSIM in Spain?+

In cities, on the coasts and on the islands, Orange, Movistar and Vodafone all work well. Movistar has strong rural coverage, and plans that can switch between several networks are the safest choice for the interior and the mountains.

Does a Spain eSIM work in Gibraltar?+

Only if the plan lists Gibraltar. Gibraltar is a British territory outside the EU with its own networks, and most Spain-only plans do not include it. Many Europe plans do, so check the country list before a day trip.

Do Spain eSIMs cover the Canary and Balearic Islands?+

Yes. The islands are part of Spain and are served by the Spanish networks that travel eSIMs use, so a plan for Spain works there as well. If you are unsure, check the coverage notes in the plan description.

Can I get a Spanish phone number with a travel eSIM?+

Most travel eSIMs are data-only. Some providers sell plans with calls and SMS for Spain; use the Calls & SMS filter on our Spain page. Messaging apps such as WhatsApp work on any data plan.

Is 5G available with a travel eSIM in Spain?+

Yes, on many plans. Around two thirds of the plans that cover Spain in our database state 5G, which you get in cities and larger towns if your phone supports 5G on the network the plan uses.
