eSIM promo code not working? Why codes fail at checkout and how to fix it
eSIM promo code not working? The common reasons codes are rejected, from typos and new-customer rules to top-ups and sale prices, and what to try next.
If your eSIM promo code is not working, it is usually not broken. In most cases the code was typed differently from how it was issued, it belongs to another shop, it only applies to certain customers or plans, or the discount was already applied through a link. This guide goes through the reasons codes are rejected at checkout, how to tell them apart and what you can still do if you have already paid.
Five checks before you give up on a code
Most rejected codes come down to one of these points. Check them in this order:
- Type it exactly. Copy the code instead of typing it, and remove spaces before and after it. Letters and digits that look alike, such as O and 0 or I and 1, cause many failed attempts.
- Use it in the right shop. A code works only with the provider that issued it. A code for one eSIM brand is rejected by every other one, even if they look similar.
- Enter it before you pay. The code field is usually in the cart or on the payment page, sometimes behind a link such as “Have a promo code?”. Once the payment is complete, most shops cannot add a code any more.
- Check the conditions. Many codes are for new customers only, for one use per customer, or for data plans but not for top-ups.
- Look at the price before you enter anything. If you came through a partner link, the discount may already be included, and entering the code again changes nothing.
Why an eSIM promo code is rejected
The message at checkout is often short, but it usually points to one of these causes:
| What you see | Likely reason | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| “Invalid code” or “code not found” | A typing mistake, a code from another provider, or a code that has been withdrawn | Copy the code again from its source and check which provider it belongs to |
| “Not valid for your account” | The code is for new customers only, or you have used it before | Check whether you already have an account with that provider |
| “Not applicable to the items in your cart” | The code excludes some plans, for example top-ups, subscriptions or plans already on sale | Read the conditions and try it with a regular data plan |
| “Minimum order not reached” | The code needs a minimum order value | Compare whether a larger plan with the code is still the better deal |
| “Code expired” | The campaign has ended | Look for a current code on our promo codes page |
| Code accepted, but the price stays the same | The discount was already applied through a link, or it only shows on the final payment step | Go to the last step before payment and check the total |
If none of these fits, take a screenshot of the message and ask the provider's support before you pay. They can see why their system rejected the code; nobody else can.
New customer codes: what counts as new
A large share of eSIM codes are meant for a first purchase. Providers decide themselves what counts as a new customer, and they usually check more than the email address:
- Your account. If you have bought from the provider before, even years ago or through the app, the code is usually refused.
- Your device or payment details. Some shops recognise a phone or card that has been used before, even with a new email address.
- Buying for someone else. A new customer code applies to the account that places the order. If you buy for a travel partner, the order still counts as yours.
Creating new accounts only to use first-purchase codes again usually breaks the provider's terms and can lead to a cancelled order. If you are an existing customer, look for codes without this condition, or for the provider's own offers for returning customers.
Top-ups, subscriptions and sale prices
Even a valid code can be limited to some products. These are the usual exclusions:
- Top-ups. Many codes apply to a new eSIM plan, not to extra data for an eSIM you already have. Check before you top up whether buying a new plan with the code is cheaper.
- Subscriptions. Monthly or recurring plans are sometimes excluded, or the discount only applies to the first period.
- Plans already on sale. When a provider runs its own discount, codes often do not stack on top of it. The lower of the two prices is usually what you get.
- One code per order. Shops normally accept a single code. If you have two, use the one that gives the bigger saving on the plan you want.
A code is only worth using on a plan that already fits your trip. Our guide to eSIM discounts explains why comparing providers usually saves more than any single code.
App, website or partner link: where the code works
Where you buy can decide whether a code is accepted:
- App-only and web-only codes. Some providers offer codes that only work in their app, for example for a first app order. Others work only in the web shop. The conditions next to the code usually say which.
- Codes applied through a link. Some providers add the discount automatically when you arrive through a partner link. Then the price in the cart is already reduced, and typing the code again does nothing.
- Currency and region. A shop may show another currency depending on where you are. The percentage discount still applies, but the amount looks different from what you expected.
If you switch between app and website during checkout, start again in one place. A code entered in the app is not carried over to an order you complete on the website.
Codes from coupon sites: why so many fail
Searching for a code often leads to coupon sites with long lists of codes for every eSIM brand. Many of these codes no longer work:
- Expired campaigns. Codes from past sales or events stay listed long after the provider has switched them off.
- Personal codes. Referral codes and codes sent to a single customer are often limited to one use and stop working once someone has used them.
- Other regions or apps. Some codes were issued for one country, one currency or one app version only.
- Guesswork. Some lists contain codes that were never valid, added in the hope that one of them works.
The most reliable sources are the provider itself (its website, app or newsletter) and partners that state the conditions next to each code. A code with a clear discount, a clear condition and a source you can check is worth more than a long list you have to try one by one.
Already paid without the code?
Most shops cannot apply a code once the payment has gone through. It is still worth a short message to support, ideally right after the purchase:
- Write to the provider's support with your order number and the code you meant to use.
- Ask whether they can refund the difference or cancel the order, so that you can buy again with the code.
- Do not install the eSIM before you have an answer. Many providers only cancel orders for eSIMs that have not been installed.
Whether they help is up to the provider; there is no general right to a refund of the difference. If you installed the eSIM already, keep it and use the code next time.
How we list promo codes
Our promo codes page shows the codes that eSIM providers currently offer for our readers, with the discount and the conditions we know: new customers only, one use per customer, or applied automatically through our link. For many destinations there is also a page with the codes that apply there, for example eSIM promo codes for Japan or for the USA.
Codes with an end date disappear from our pages once they have expired. Conditions are set by each provider and can change without notice, so a code that worked last month can fail today. If one of our codes does not work, tell us at info@esimrankings.com and we will check it with the provider. To see which plans are cheapest after a discount, you can compare eSIM plans by destination.
Questions travellers ask
Why does my eSIM promo code say it is invalid?+
The most common reasons are a typing mistake, a code from another provider or a code that has expired. Copy the code again from its source, remove spaces and check that you are in the right shop. If it still fails, the code may be limited to new customers or certain plans.
Can I use an eSIM promo code more than once?+
Usually not. Many eSIM codes are limited to one use per customer or to the first purchase. Some codes can be used repeatedly, but the conditions next to the code tell you which kind it is.
Can I use a promo code on a top-up?+
Often not. Many providers apply codes only to new eSIM plans and exclude top-ups. Check the conditions, and compare whether buying a new plan with the code is cheaper than topping up your current eSIM.
Can I combine two eSIM promo codes?+
Almost never. Shops normally accept one code per order, and codes often do not apply on top of a provider's own sale price. Use the code that gives the bigger saving on the plan you want.
Can I add a promo code after I have paid?+
Most shops cannot add a code after payment. Contact the provider's support right away with your order number and the code. Some providers cancel or adjust orders for eSIMs that have not been installed yet, but they are not obliged to.
Do eSIM promo codes work in the app?+
It depends on the code. Some work only in the provider's app, others only on the website, and many work in both. The conditions shown with the code usually say where it can be used.
